We only have two weeks to the January social so we are going to start full speed ahead covering the dances for that social.

THE ST BERNARD'S WALTZ (W16) couples around the room in ballroom hold heading anti-clockwise, ladies on the outside.
1-4 In ballroom hold, take 3 steps (step-close, step-close, step-close) sideways toward the lady's right (man's left), then stamp both feet. (lady begins with right foot, man with the left)
5-6 Take 2 steps sideways back in the opposite direction. (step-close, step-close)
7-8 Take 2 (walking) steps toward the centre of the circle (lady beginning with the right foot, man with the left foot)
9-10 Take 2 steps back out (same feet)
11-12 Man drops right hand and lady turns under his raised left arm.
13-16 Waltz onward (to lady's right), finishing ready to repeat the dance.

1 – 16 Four progressive half-reels of three across the dance – danced as follows:
1 – 4 1st couple with 2nd woman dance a half-reel of three. 1st woman passes her partner with the right shoulder to begin and finishes in the middle of the set facing her own side of the dance. 1st man finishes in 1st woman’s original place and 2nd woman in 1st man’s original place.
5 – 8 1st couple with 2nd man dance a half-reel of three. 1st woman passes her partner with the left shoulder to begin and finishes in the middle of the set facing the men’s side of the dance. 1st man finishes in 2nd man’s original place and 2nd man in 1st woman’s original place.
9 – 12 1st couple repeat bars 1-4 with 3rd woman who finishes in 2nd man’s original place.
13 – 16 1st couple repeat bars 5-8 with 3rd man, who finishes in 2nd woman’s original place. 1st couple finish in third place in the middle of the set.

9 – 16 1st, 2nd and 3rd couples dance a promenade finishing in original places.
17 – 20 1st couple set to each other and cast off one place. 2nd couple step up on bars 19-20.
21 – 24 1st couple dance back to back.
25 – 32 2nd, 1st and 3rd couples dance six hands round and back.

I hope everyone enjoyed the class last week with Bob & Barb Anglin. I know, finally a couple of good teachers in the class!
This week also has some challenging dances. There is some risk of collision in Bauldy Bain's Fiddle. Maybe you should bring some shoulder pads. We are repeating Culla Bay. We did it a few weeks ago but didn't leave enough time go over it in detail.

Dancers arranged in a square set as for the Eightsome Reel.
1 – 4 1st man and 3rd woman, and 1st woman and 3rd man, turn with the right hand half way round to face each other then, pulling back right shoulders, cast out to opposite places and remain facing out.
5 – 8 1st and 3rd couples continue dancing on clockwise one place round the set, curving in to finish back to back in the centre of the set, 1st couple facing fourth place, and 3rd couple facing second place. Meanwhile, 2nd and 4th couples repeat bars 1-4. N.B. on bars 7 – 8, 1st and 2nd women, 1st and 2nd men, 3rd and 4th women and 3rd and 4th men dance in a curve round each other to new places, passing right shoulder.
9 – 16 All dance reels of four across the set.
17 – 20 2nd and 1st couples, and at the same time 3rd and 4th couples, dance four hands once round to the left.

A 32 bar reel for 5 couples in a square

Couples one to four form a square set. The fifth couple starts in the center facing first couple.
1 – 8 Parallel reels of three up and down the dance. Fifth man gives right shoulder to first woman, with third man joining at the bottom while fifth woman gives right shoulder to first man, with third woman joining at the bottom. Fifth couple finishes in the center facing fourth couple, fifth woman behind fifth man. Second and forth couples must face down at the end of bar 8.
9 – 16 Shadow reel of three across the dance. With 4W, 5M, and 2M leading their partners and each couple dancing as a unit fourth couple and fifth couple pass left shoulders to begin the reel. Fifth couple ends in original places, facing first couple.
17 – 20 First and fifth couples dance rights and lefts halfway. (First couple has now progressed to the center of the dance.)
21 – 24 First and fifth couples dance four hands once round to the left.
25 – 32 On the outside, dance eight hands halfway to the left, all set, pull back RS, and
chase one place. while In the center, first couple turn by the right then by the left (kilt or elbow grip is suggested) or dance any other mutually agreeable turn, birl, swing, or setting step. End facing the new first couple. The order is now 2345 on the outside, with 1C in the center. Repeat four times to original positions.

The Silver Square
A 32 bar reel for 5 couples in a square

Couples one to four form a square set. The fifth couple starts in the center facing first couple.
1 – 8 Parallel reels of three up and down the dance. Fifth man gives right shoulder to first woman, with third man joining at the bottom while fifth woman gives right shoulder to first man, with third woman joining at the bottom. Fifth couple finishes in the center facing fourth couple, fifth woman behind fifth man. Second and forth couples must face down at the end of bar 8.
9 – 16 Shadow reel of three across the dance. With 4W, 5M, and 2M leading their partners and each couple dancing as a unit fourth couple and fifth couple pass left shoulders to begin the reel. Fifth couple ends in original places, facing first couple.
17 – 20 First and fifth couples dance rights and lefts halfway. (First couple has now progressed to the center of the dance.)
21 – 24 First and fifth couples dance four hands once round to the left.
25 – 32 On the outside, dance eight hands halfway to the left, all set, pull back RS, and
chase one place. while In the center, first couple turn by the right then by the left (kilt or elbow grip is suggested) or dance any other mutually agreeable turn, birl, swing, or setting step. End facing the new first couple. The order is now 2345 on the outside, with 1C in the center. Repeat four times to original positions.

17 – 24 1st couple divide and dance reels of three on the sides, 1st woman giving right shoulder to 2nd man, 1st man giving left shoulder to 2nd woman to begin. Finish in the centre facing up.
25 – 28 1st couple joining nearer hands dance up to the top and turn the 2nd couple with their free hands.

Posting the dances early this week. Jody and I are off to Colorado the investigate a site for the TAC Summer School in 2014. In our place Bob & Barb Anglin will be taking the class.
We have asked them to repeat Mrs Stewart of Fasnacloich. Last week we the class almost mastered the dance. This week will give you a chance to really get a grasp of the dance.

This week we are starting to review dances for the December Social. The dances for this social are easier and we should be able to concentrate on the few difficult dances.

A dance to mark the passage of 700 years since the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297
Strathspey – 3 couples – 32 bars
1 – 4 1st couple set to each other and then, giving right hands cross over to second place on opposite sides and stay facing out. 2nd couple step up on bars 3-4.
5 – 8 1st couple dance round their first corners, passing them by the right and then turn each other with the left hand to finish in the middle of the dance in second place with the man facing down and the woman facing up.
9 – 12 2nd, 1st and 3rd men dance right hands across on the men’s side, while their partners dance right hands across on the women’s side. At the end, 1st couple pass each other by the right.
13 – 16 1st woman dances left hands across with 2nd and 3rd men on the men’s side while 1st man dances left hands across with 2nd and 3rd women on the women’s side. 1st man finishes between 2nd couple in first place all facing down, while 1st woman finishes between 3rd couple in third place all facing up.
17 – 20 All set in lines of three facing down and up and then change places with the opposite person giving right hand.
21 – 24 All set again in lines of three facing down and up and then change places with the opposite person giving right hand. 2nd couple stay facing up in first place, 3rd couple stay facing down in third place and 1st couple turn right about to finish facing each other (Man facing down, woman up).
25 – 32 1st man dances a reel of three across the dance in first place with 2nd couple, beginning by giving right shoulder to 2nd man. 1st woman, similarly, dances a reel of three across the dance in third place with 3rd couple, beginning by giving right shoulder to 3rd woman. At the end, 1st couple dance to second place on own sides.

1 – 4 First couple, giving right hands, cross over and cast off one place on the opposite side. Second couple move up on Bars 3 – 4.
5 – 8 First couple, giving left hands, cross over and first lady casts up round second lady, while first man casts off round third man, to finish beside their 1st Corner.
9 – 12 First couple, holding their 1st Corner in Promenade position on their right, leads them round behind their 2nd Corner and places them in the opposite 1st Corner position. At the same time the 2nd Corners Advance towards each other and Retire (Diagram 1).
13 – 16 First couple turn each other with left hands to finish beside their 2nd Corner. (Turn strongly for one and a quarter times.)
17 – 20 First couple, holding their 2nd Corner in Promenade position on their right, leads them round behind their 1st Corners (who are on the wrong side) and places them in the opposite 2nd Corner position. At the same time the 1st Corners Advance towards each other and Retire.
21 – 24 First couple turn each other with left hands to finish facing their usual 1st Corner position (first lady faces third lady while first man faces second man).
25 – 28 First couple dance a half Reel of Four diagonally across the Set with their 1st Corners —first couple , passing by the right to begin, curve by their right round the 1st Corner position, while the Corners pass each other by the left in the middle to their own sides.
29 – 32 First couple, passing each other by the right in the middle, dance a half Reel of Four diagonally across the Set with their 2nd Corners—again passing by the right to begin, then crossing over by the right to finish in 2nd place on their own sides (Diagram 2).
First couple repeat from the 2nd place and cross by the left, down between fourth couple, to the bottom. Each couple repeat in turn as first couple.

Reel - 3 couples - 32 bars
Tune - "Bratach Bana"
1 – 4 1st couple turn by the right hand and cast off to second place on own sides. (2nd couple move up on Bars 3 - 4)
5 – 8 1st man dances down between 3rd couple and then casts up to second place on the ladies' side. 1st lady dances up between 2nd couple and then casts off to second place on the men's side.
9 - 12 Half reels of three on the sides. 1st man gives right shoulder to 2nd lady, while 1st lady gives right shoulder to 3rd man.
13 – 16 Half reels of three across the dance. 1st man cuts up between 3rd couple who are in top place, giving left shoulder to 3rd man. 1st lady cuts down between 2nd couple who are in 3rd place, giving left shoulder to 2nd lady.
NOTE The 2nd and 3rd couples dance round loops on the corners between the half reels. (1st couple are now in second place on own sides, 2nd couple are in third place on wrong sides, and 3rd couple are in top place on wrong sides).
