9 – 12 1st couple set and cast up one place. 2nd couple step down on bars 11-12.
13 – 16 1st and 2nd couples dance left hands across once round.
17 – 24 1st couple, followed by 2nd couple who dance up the sides to begin, dance down between 3rd couple cast up round them, dance up to the top, and cast off into second place, while 2nd couple dance up into top place.

5 – 8 1st couple cross, giving right hands, cast round first corners by the right and finish back to back in the middle, facing their first corners.
9 – 12 1st couple set to their first corners. 1st couple then cast around each other by the right to finish in their partner’s first corner position, while their corners dance into the middle and, pulling back right shoulders, finish back to back, facing their original positions.
13 – 16 1st couple and first corners set to each other. First corners cast round each other by the right to finish on the opposite sides in each other’s original positions, while 1st couple dance into the middle and, pulling back right shoulders, finish back to back, facing their second corners.
17 – 24 1st couple repeat bars 9–16 with second corners but pass by the right on bars 23-24 to finish in second place on opposite sides. Second corners finish on the opposite sides in each other’s original positions.

This dance was devised for Bob and Barbara Anglin in appreciation of their support and encouragement as we began teaching in Ottawa and running the Ottawa Valley workshop.
We had an exceptional day with Bob & Barbara at the summit of Whistler before the TAC AGM in July, 2009.
Note: The movement described in bars 9-24 was first devised by the late Alex Hay and published in his dance “Peter White”.

THE ST BERNARD'S WALTZ (W16) couples around the room in ballroom hold heading anti-clockwise, ladies on the outside.
1-4 In ballroom hold, take 3 steps (step-close, step-close, step-close) sideways toward the lady's right (man's left), then stamp both feet. (lady begins with right foot, man with the left)
5-6 Take 2 steps sideways back in the opposite direction. (step-close, step-close)
7-8 Take 2 (walking) steps toward the centre of the circle (lady beginning with the right foot, man with the left foot)
9-10 Take 2 steps back out (same feet)
11-12 Man drops right hand and lady turns under his raised left arm.

I hope everyone enjoyed the class last week with Bob & Barb Anglin. I know, finally a couple of good teachers in the class!
This week also has some challenging dances. There is some risk of collision in Bauldy Bain's Fiddle. Maybe you should bring some shoulder pads. We are repeating Culla Bay. We did it a few weeks ago but didn't leave enough time go over it in detail.

9 – 12 First man casts up, crosses over at the top and casts down into second place on his own side while first lady casts down, crosses over below third couple and casts up into second place on her own side. Meanwhile, second and third couples dance right hands across once round, dancing out to corners on bar 12, facing clockwise.
13 – 16 First couple, giving left hands, turn each other one and a quarter times to finish facing their first corner positions. Meanwhile, second and third couples continue to dance clockwise round the outside to finish in opposite corner positions.
17 – 20 First couple dance half a reel of four with first corners, passing each other right shoulders in the centre for. . ...
21 – 24 Half a reel of four with second corners, passing each other right shoulders in the centre again to finish in second place on own sides.
25 – 32 Second, first and third couples dance six hands round to the left and back.
Repeat from second place.

Dancers arranged in a square set as for the Eightsome Reel.
1 – 4 1st man and 3rd woman, and 1st woman and 3rd man, turn with the right hand half way round to face each other then, pulling back right shoulders, cast out to opposite places and remain facing out.
5 – 8 1st and 3rd couples continue dancing on clockwise one place round the set, curving in to finish back to back in the centre of the set, 1st couple facing fourth place, and 3rd couple facing second place. Meanwhile, 2nd and 4th couples repeat bars 1-4. N.B. on bars 7 – 8, 1st and 2nd women, 1st and 2nd men, 3rd and 4th women and 3rd and 4th men dance in a curve round each other to new places, passing right shoulder.
9 – 16 All dance reels of four across the set.
17 – 20 2nd and 1st couples, and at the same time 3rd and 4th couples, dance four hands once round to the left.
21 – 24 Joining nearer hands with partner, all set, then 1st and 2nd couples and, at the same time, 3rd and 4th couples, dance right hands across half way.
25 – 28 2nd and 4th couples dance left hands across once round, to finish facing out.
29 – 32 2nd and 4th couples, passing 1st and 3rd couples by the right shoulder, dance out and progress on one place clockwise to finish with 2nd couple in first place and 4th couple in third place. All couples have now progressed one place anti-clockwise round the set.
Repeat, with original 2nd and 4th couples leading.

A 32 bar reel for 5 couples in a square

Couples one to four form a square set. The fifth couple starts in the center facing first couple.
1 – 8 Parallel reels of three up and down the dance. Fifth man gives right shoulder to first woman, with third man joining at the bottom while fifth woman gives right shoulder to first man, with third woman joining at the bottom. Fifth couple finishes in the center facing fourth couple, fifth woman behind fifth man. Second and forth couples must face down at the end of bar 8.
9 – 16 Shadow reel of three across the dance. With 4W, 5M, and 2M leading their partners and each couple dancing as a unit fourth couple and fifth couple pass left shoulders to begin the reel. Fifth couple ends in original places, facing first couple.
17 – 20 First and fifth couples dance rights and lefts halfway. (First couple has now progressed to the center of the dance.)
21 – 24 First and fifth couples dance four hands once round to the left.
25 – 32 On the outside, dance eight hands halfway to the left, all set, pull back RS, and
chase one place. while In the center, first couple turn by the right then by the left (kilt or elbow grip is suggested) or dance any other mutually agreeable turn, birl, swing, or setting step. End facing the new first couple. The order is now 2345 on the outside, with 1C in the center. Repeat four times to original positions.
Repeat from new positions.

25 – 28 1st couple joining nearer hands dance up to the top and turn the 2nd couple with their free hands.
29 – 32 1st couple dance down between 3rd couple, cross back to own sides and cast up to 2nd place.
33 – 40 1st couple dance right hands across, 1st woman with 2nd couple and 1st man with 3rd couple. 1st couple pass right shoulders and dance left hands across, 1st woman with 3rd couple and 1st man with 2nd couple to finish in 2nd place on own sides.
Repeat from 2nd place.

This week also has some challenging dances. There is some risk of collision in Bauldy Bain's Fiddle. Maybe you should bring some shoulder pads. We are repeating Culla Bay. We did it a few weeks ago but didn't leave enough time go over it in detail.
