This week we will be trying to review a number of the dances for the Ball on the weekend. Since this is a review night, we have planned more dances than usual.

Book 12 – No. 12
32-bar jig for three couples in a four-couple longwise set
1 – 4 1st couple set and cast off one place. 2nd couple step up on bars 3-4.
5 – 8 1st and 3rd couples dance right hands across once round.
9 – 12 1st couple set and cast up one place. 2nd couple step down on bars 11-12.
13 – 16 1st and 2nd couples dance left hands across once round.
17 – 24 1st couple, followed by 2nd couple who dance up the sides to begin, dance down between 3rd couple cast up round them, dance up to the top, and cast off into second place, while 2nd couple dance up into top place.
25 – 32 1st and 2nd couples dance rights and lefts.
Repeat, having passed a couple.

A strathspey for three couples
1 - 8 First and second couples Half-Reel Progression, i. e. ,
1 - 2 First and second couples turn partner with both hands to finish in a line up and down the middle of the set.
3 - 6 They dance a half reel of four, then
7 - 8 Turn partner with both hands to finish on own sides having changed places.
9 - 10 First couple, advancing, set to each other. On bar 10 they dance in to finish in a diagonal line with first corners ready to turn them.
11 - 12 They turn first corners with both hands to finish, first man between third couple facing up, first woman between second couple facing down.
13 - 16 The same as bars 9-12 except first couple turn their second corners and finish between their corners.
17 - 18 All three couples cross over giving the right hand, first couple to face out on own sides. The corner dancers face each other diagonally.
19 - 20 First man casts up round second woman while first woman casts off round third man. As first couple are casting the corner dancers advance and retire diagonally, one step each way. First man finishes between second couple, all facing down, and first woman finishes between third couple, all facing up.
21 - 22 Second and third men, first couple, and second and third women change places giving the right hand, first man to finish facing down, first woman facing up. The corner dancers face each other diagonally.
23 - 24 First man casts up round second woman while first woman casts off round third man. While first couple are casting the corner dancers advance and retire as at bars 19-20. First couple finish in a diagonal line with second woman and third man.
25 - 32 First couple dance a half reel of four with second woman and third man, dance round each other passing by the left shoulder, then dance a half reel of four with third woman and second man. On the last two bars first couple turn with the right hand to finish on own sides in second place.
Repeat, having passed a couple.
The Diamond Quarrie

1-8 Figure of eight progression: 1st couple cross over with right hands, cast off one place, cross up to first place on own side and cast into second place, while: 2nd couple set, cross up to first place on opposite side, cast off one place, and cross up to first place on own side to face out.
9-16 Mirror reels of three: 2nd couple dance out and down, 1st couple dance in and down, 3rd couple dance out and up, 2nd and 3rd couples dance the long way into place to finish while 1st couple pass left shoulders, to face 1st corners.
17-24 Set to corners and partner (hello-goodbye): On bars 23-24, 1st couple set to each other up and down the set then advance on the second pas de basque to face partner’s 1st corner (as if continuing the hello-goodbye setting).
25-28 1st Corners pass and turn (on own side): 1st couple dance around their partner’s 1st corner position, pass corner by the right shoulder, approach up and down the dance and pass right shoulders in the middle, while: 1st corners dance into the middle, turn with right hands, and dance out to place (phrased: in on 1, turn on 2, out on 3-4).
29-32 2nd Corners pass and turn: 1st couple repeat bars 25-28 with partner’s 2nd corner to finish in second place on own side.

1 – 16 1st couple dance a petronella turn to face each other up and down the middle and set. 1 st couple repeat this three times to finish in original places. On bars 1-2, 2nd couple step up and, on bars 3-4 set. 2nd couple dance petronella turns and set, following the 1st couple one place behind. On bars 15-16, instead of setting, 2nd couple dance a petronella turn to original places.
17 – 24 1st couple lead down the middle and up.
25 – 28 1st and 2nd couples dance right hands across once round to finish facing partners in a diagonal line across the set with 1st woman and 2nd man back to back in the middle.
29 – 32 1st and 2nd couples dance a half poussette.

At the same time, first corners dance in towards each other and, pulling back by the right, finish back to back in the middle facing own places.

Dances for April 4, 2013
As we mentioned last week, this class will be merged with the Advanced Teaching class to form a single teaching class. We thought it might make sense for the teaching class to be on Thursday. However, the Experienced Social class, which is currently on Thursday, doesn't want to move to Tuesday. Rather than have both the Experienced Social and the teaching class on Thursday, the teaching class will be on Tuesday.

THE CANADIAN BOOK OF SCOTTISH COUNTRY DANCES by John Drewry
Maggieknockater is a hamlet two miles North-east of Craigellachie. In a field there beside the road is a large sign - “Maggieknockater Apiary” - hence the title of this dance.
Jig – 4 couples – 32 bars.
Tune – “Forres Country dance”, see alternative tune for “Holyrood House” Book 22 No. 4.
1 – 4 1st couple, giving right hands in passing, cross over to opposite sides and cast off to second place. (2nd couple step up on Bars 3-4)
5 – 8 1st and 3rd couples dance right hands across.At the end:-3rd lady turns towards 1st man, retaining hold of his right hand, then joins left hands with him in promenade hold facing out towards the ladies’ side; 1st lady dances similarly with 3rd man so that they finish facing out towards the men’s side of the dance.
9 – 12 Reels of three on the sides. 1st man and 3rd lady, dancing together, dance half a reel of three on the ladies’ side with 4th and 2nd ladies. They pass 4th lady by the right to begin. 1st lady and 3rd man, dancing together, similarly dance half a reel of three on the men’s side with 2nd and 4th men. They pass 2nd man by the right to begin. Dances for March 28, 2013
It seems that due to the low attendance of this class and the Advanced Teaching class these two classes will be combined next year. We took over the class a few years ago and it was quite large (3-4 sets). I guess the dancers are voting with their feet and preferring the social classes to the teaching classes Jody and I as well as Bob & Barb Anglin are offering.

29 – 32 2nd and 4th couples, passing 1st and 3rd couples by the right shoulder, dance out and progress on one place clockwise to finish with 2nd couple in first place and 4th couple in third place. All couples have now progressed one place anti-clockwise round the set.
Repeat, with original 2nd and 4th couples leading.

A jig for three couples in a longways set.
1 – 8 1st couple cast off one place on their own sides (2nd couple stepping up on bars 1–2), cross over giving right hands in passing, cast off one place on the opposite side with nearer hands joined lead up to 2nd place, finishing back to back in the centre facing out.
9 – 16 1st couple join hands with their corners to dance Double Triangles, finishing facing 2nd corners.
17 – 24 1st couple dance a right shoulder diagonal reel of four with their 2nd corners. 1st couple finish by passing left shoulders to face 1st corners.
25 – 32 1st couple dance a right shoulder diagonal reel of four with 1st corners, finishing in 2nd place on their own sides.
Repeat from new places.

3 – 6 1st, 2nd and 3rd couples, giving both hands, turn twice round.
7 – 8 1st, 2nd and 3rd couples set to partners.
9 – 16 1st, 2nd and 3rd couples dance a grand chain.
17 – 24 1st couple dance figures of eight on own sides, dancing in and down to begin and giving nearer hands when possible. 1st couple finish in the middle and, on bar 24, 2nd couple dance in to form a diagonal line with 1st couple, 1st woman and 2nd man back to back.
25 – 28 1st and 2nd couples dance a half poussette, 2nd couple finishing in top place while 1st couple turn in the middle. On bar 28, 3rd couple dance in to form a diagonal line with 1st couple, 1st woman and 3rd man back to back.
29 – 32 1st and 3rd couples dance a half poussette to finish in the order 2, 3, 1.
Repeat with a new top couple.

13 – 14 1st couple cast off into 2nd place (2nd move up),
15 – 16 And turn, as in Petronella, so that the man is between 3rd couple and woman between 2nd.
17 – 18 1st couple set to each other, while 2nd and 3rd women – and men – change places, giving right hands.
19 – 20 1st couple turn by the right hand three-quarters round to ‘wrong’ sides, 2nd place, while 2nd and 3rd couples set to partners

The following is an excerpt from a letter written by Bob Campbell in either October 1985 or January 1986 to the editor of TACTALK which was printed in the first issue of 1986:
“… it is said there are no turns for 2nd and 3rd couples in the new figure. Actually there are turns. These follow necessarily from an amendment that Hugh Foss made to the dance by way of a general newsletter in October 1967. Reference is to the setting by 2nd and 3rd couples on bars 19-20, 21-24 and 25-28. I quote Hugh’s words: ‘When 2nd and 3rd couples set they should do the first setting facing the person they have just passed and the second facing the person they are going to pass.’ It follows that for smooth performance the dancers going counter-clockwise round the square will have a long, or ‘polite’ turn. At the time, the change was considered an improvement in an already good dance.
As far as I know J. B. Milne is the only dance with setting shared in this way. It should be noted that such setting does not occur in The Australian Ladies, although the counter-clockwise dancers do have a long turn. (The diagram requires amendment.)”

1–8 First couple lead through third couple, cast up one place on own side; first woman wheel right hand with second couple, first man wheel right hand with third couple.
9 – 12 First couple dance half reels of four with first corners, then
13 – 16 half reels of four with second corners. At end of reels first couple turn left hand in centre ready to
17 – 24 give left shoulders to person in first corner’s position for two reels of three across the dance. First couple finish in second place, own side.
25 – 26 First couple change places with person in their first corner’s position (i.e. first lady right hand to third lady and first man right hand to second man).
27 – 28 Change left hands on sides; first lady with second man, first man with third lady. (First corners now back in original places.)
29 – 30 First lady changes places, giving right hand to third man (in second lady’s position), while first man changes places, giving right hand to second lady (in third man’s position).

3 - 6 They dance a half reel of four, then
7 - 8 Turn partner with both hands to finish on own sides having changed places.
9 - 10 First couple, advancing, set to each other. On bar 10 they dance in to finish in a diagonal line with first corners ready to turn them.
11 - 12 They turn first corners with both hands to finish, first man between third couple facing up, first woman between second couple facing down.
13 - 16 The same as bars 9-12 except first couple turn their second corners and finish between their corners.
17 - 18 All three couples cross over giving the right hand, first couple to face out on own sides. The corner dancers face each other diagonally.
19 - 20 First man casts up round second woman while first woman casts off round third man. As first couple are casting the corner dancers advance and retire diagonally, one step each way. First man finishes between second couple, all facing down, and first woman finishes between third couple, all facing up.
21 - 22 Second and third men, first couple, and second and third women change places giving the right hand, first man to finish facing down, first woman facing up. The corner dancers face each other diagonally.

17 – 20 1st couple, followed by 2nd couple who dance up the sides to begin, lead down the middle.
21 – 24 2nd couple, followed by 1st couple, lead up the middle to finish with 2nd couple in first place and 1st couple in second place.
25 – 32 2nd and 1st couple dance rights and lefts.
Repeat, having passed a couple.
Note: In bars 5-8 and 9-12, turning with both hands gives the appearance of a stitch being made. Therefore, two hands should be given although four skip change of step are danced.
