Here are the dance for this week. Some of it will depend on how many show up. We may have to substitute something else for Culla Bay if we don't have enough dancers.
DANCING DOLPHINS

A jig for three couples danced in longwise four couple sets.
1 – 8 First couple, cross with the right hand and cast off one place. (Second couple step up on bars 3 & 4.) First couple turn each other with the left hand 1 ¼ times. First couple finish facing the lady’s side, the man has his partner on his right. ***
9 – 16 First couple in tandem, dance a right shoulder reel of three with second and third lady. *
17 – 24 First couple in tandem, dance a left shoulder reel of three with second and third men. **
25 – 32 First couple with promenade hold dance out the ladies’ side and down around third lady. First couple dance up the middle, drop hands and cast around second couple to finish in second place.
First couple repeat from second place.
* First lady, followed by her partner, they pass third lady with the right shoulder to begin. First couple turn by the right to face up the set. First man, followed by first lady pass second lady with the right shoulder. First man, followed by first lady pass third lady with the left shoulder. First couple turning by the left they face down the set. First lady, followed by first man. Dance across the set to face third man.
** First lady, followed by her partner, pass third man with the left shoulder to begin. First couple turn by the left to face up the set. First man, followed by first lady, pass second man by the left shoulder. First man, followed by first lady pass third man with the right shoulder. First couple turning by the right they face down the set. First lady, followed by first man, dance across the set to finish between second and third lady.
*** Note: First couple should begin parallel with the side of the set and remain parallel with the set throughout the reel. This will require good covering. First couple must be aware of their partner especially on the turns. First couple cover with each other not just follow each other. Where the instructions say follow also read cover.

1-8 Figure of eight progression: 1st couple cross over with right hands, cast off one place, cross up to first place on own side and cast into second place, while: 2nd couple set, cross up to first place on opposite side, cast off one place, and cross up to first place on own side to face out.
9-16 Mirror reels of three: 2nd couple dance out and down, 1st couple dance in and down, 3rd couple dance out and up, 2nd and 3rd couples dance the long way into place to finish while 1st couple pass left shoulders, to face 1st corners.
17-24 Set to corners and partner (hello-goodbye): On bars 23-24, 1st couple set to each other up and down the set then advance on the second pas de basque to face partner’s 1st corner (as if continuing the hello-goodbye setting).
25-28 1st Corners pass and turn (on own side): 1st couple dance around their partner’s 1st corner position, pass corner by the right shoulder, approach up and down the dance and pass right shoulders in the middle, while: 1st corners dance into the middle, turn with right hands, and dance out to place (phrased: in on 1, turn on 2, out on 3-4).
29-32 2nd Corners pass and turn: 1st couple repeat bars 25-28 with partner’s 2nd corner to finish in second place on own side.

Dancers arranged in a square set as for the Eightsome Reel.
1 – 4 1st man and 3rd woman, and 1st woman and 3rd man, turn with the right hand half way round to face each other then, pulling back right shoulders, cast out to opposite places and remain facing out.
5 – 8 1st and 3rd couples continue dancing on clockwise one place round the set, curving in to finish back to back in the centre of the set, 1st couple facing fourth place, and 3rd couple facing second place. Meanwhile, 2nd and 4th couples repeat bars 1-4. N.B. on bars 7 – 8, 1st and 2nd women, 1st and 2nd men, 3rd and 4th women and 3rd and 4th men dance in a curve round each other to new places, passing right shoulder.
9 – 16 All dance reels of four across the set.
17 – 20 2nd and 1st couples, and at the same time 3rd and 4th couples, dance four hands once round to the left.
21 – 24 Joining nearer hands with partner, all set, then 1st and 2nd couples and, at the same time, 3rd and 4th couples, dance right hands across half way.
25 – 28 2nd and 4th couples dance left hands across once round, to finish facing out.
29 – 32 2nd and 4th couples, passing 1st and 3rd couples by the right shoulder, dance out and progress on one place clockwise to finish with 2nd couple in first place and 4th couple in third place. All couples have now progressed one place anti-clockwise round the set.
Repeat, with original 2nd and 4th couples leading.
Culla Bay (pronounced ‘coola’) is on the island of Benbecula where Sheila Jupp spent part of her childhood.

1 – 8 1st couple cast off one place on their own sides (2nd couple stepping up on bars 1–2), cross over giving right hands in passing, cast off one place on the opposite side with nearer hands joined lead up to 2nd place, finishing back to back in the centre facing out.
9 – 16 1st couple join hands with their corners to dance Double Triangles, finishing facing 2nd corners.
17 – 24 1st couple dance a right shoulder diagonal reel of four with their 2nd corners. 1st couple finish by passing left shoulders to face 1st corners.

17 – 24 1st couple dance figures of eight on own sides, dancing in and down to begin and giving nearer hands when possible. 1st couple finish in the middle and, on bar 24, 2nd couple dance in to form a diagonal line with 1st couple, 1st woman and 2nd man back to back.
25 – 28 1st and 2nd couples dance a half poussette, 2nd couple finishing in top place while 1st couple turn in the middle. On bar 28, 3rd couple dance in to form a diagonal line with 1st couple, 1st woman and 3rd man back to back.

The following is an excerpt from a letter written by Bob Campbell in either October 1985 or January 1986 to the editor of TACTALK which was printed in the first issue of 1986:
“… it is said there are no turns for 2nd and 3rd couples in the new figure. Actually there are turns. These follow necessarily from an amendment that Hugh Foss made to the dance by way of a general newsletter in October 1967. Reference is to the setting by 2nd and 3rd couples on bars 19-20, 21-24 and 25-28. I quote Hugh’s words: ‘When 2nd and 3rd couples set they should do the first setting facing the person they have just passed and the second facing the person they are going to pass.’ It follows that for smooth performance the dancers going counter-clockwise round the square will have a long, or ‘polite’ turn. At the time, the change was considered an improvement in an already good dance.
As far as I know J. B. Milne is the only dance with setting shared in this way. It should be noted that such setting does not occur in The Australian Ladies, although the counter-clockwise dancers do have a long turn. (The diagram requires amendment.)”

THE TWA MEENIT REEL.

A reel for four couples in a longways set.
1 – 4 1st and 3rd ladies cast off one place and dance into the centre line of the dance to finish facing up the dance. Meanwhile 2nd and 4th men cast up one place and dance into the centre line of the dance to finish 2nd man facing 1st lady, and 4th man facing 3rd lady.
5 – 12 1st and 3rd ladies with 2nd and 4th men dance a reel of four up and down the centre line of the dance. To start the reel 2nd man passes 1st lady right shoulder and 4th man likewise with 3rd lady.
13 – 16 1st lady with 2nd man and likewise 3rd lady with 4th man turn each other three quarters round by the right hand to return to places.
17 – 20 1st man with 2nd lady, and likewise 3rd man with 4th lady, turn each other by the right hand once round and return to places.
21 – 24 1st couple with 2nd couple and likewise 3rd couple with 4th couple dance four hands round to the left.
25 – 28 All joining hands on the sidelines, dance advance and retire.

Dances for February 21, 2013
We currently don't have a program for the March social. As a result we are going to do some dances from the ball program that haven't been covered yet this year.
Also, we will indulging the teachers this week and doing Jeannie o' the Witchin' E'e. I have been asked to teach at the West End Workshop (west end of Toronto) and hope to do this dance in one of the classes.If you are in the Toronto area on March 23 you can come and dance.

1 – 16 1st couple dance a petronella turn to face each other up and down the middle and set. 1 st couple repeat this three times to finish in original places. On bars 1-2, 2nd couple step up and, on bars 3-4 set. 2nd couple dance petronella turns and set, following the 1st couple one place behind. On bars 15-16, instead of setting, 2nd couple dance a petronella turn to original places.
17 – 24 1st couple lead down the middle and up.
25 – 28 1st and 2nd couples dance right hands across once round to finish facing partners in a diagonal line across the set with 1st woman and 2nd man back to back in the middle.
29 – 32 1st and 2nd couples dance a half poussette.

9 – 16 Double triangles - on bars 15-16, as first couple set, they turn right about to face each other, still in the centre.
17 – 24 First couple, joining both hands, slip down the middle and up to second place, remaining in the centre of the dance.
25 – 28 First woman dances left hands across with second and third men while first man dances right hands across with second and third women.

1 – 2 1st and 2nd couples turn with two hands half-way round. After one bar, 1st man releases his left hand to dance into 2nd woman’s place, while 1st woman dances into her original place. 2nd woman similarly release her left hand to dance into 1st man’s place while 2nd man dances into his original place.
3 – 4 1st couple set to 2nd couple.
5 – 6 1st and 2nd couples turn with both hands half-way round. After one bar, 1st woman releases her left hand to dance into 2nd man’s place while 1st man dances into 2nd woman’s place while 2nd woman dances into 1st man’s place.

The Bob Blackie Memorial fund was created by his good friend Ed Jones to acknowledge Bob’s longtime work with TAC. The fund brings a recipient to Summer School each year.

This dance was devised for Bob and Barbara Anglin in appreciation of their support and encouragement as we began teaching in Ottawa and running the Ottawa Valley workshop.
We had an exceptional day with Bob & Barbara at the summit of Whistler before the TAC AGM in July, 2009.
Note: The movement described in bars 9-24 was first devised by the late Alex Hay and published in his dance “Peter White”.
