Posting the dances early this week. Jody and I are off to Colorado the investigate a site for the TAC Summer School in 2014. In our place Bob & Barb Anglin will be taking the class.
We have asked them to repeat Mrs Stewart of Fasnacloich. Last week we the class almost mastered the dance. This week will give you a chance to really get a grasp of the dance.

5 – 8 1st woman dances a half figure of eight round 3rd couple while 1st man dances a half figure of eight round 2nd couple. At the end, 1st couple pass left shoulders to finish facing first corners.
9 – 12 1st couple dance the path of corners pass and turn, and pull back right shoulders on bar 12 to finish back to back in the middle, 1st woman facing up and 1st man facing down First corners dance normal corners pass and turn, i.e. pass 1st couple right shoulder on bar 9, turn giving the right hand to face their own place on bar 10, begin dancing out to pass 1st couple right shoulder again on bar 11, and dance round to place on bar 12.
13 – 16 1st couple and partner’s second corners (2nd woman and 3rd man) repeat bars 9 – 12, and on bar 16, 1st couple pull back their right shoulder to finish back to back in the middle in second place facing their own sides (Fig. 2), ready for

25 – 30 Reels of three across the dance. 1st and 2nd women and 1st and 3rd men give right shoulders to begin the reels. 1st couple finish in second place on opposite sides.
31 – 32 1st couple, giving right hands, cross over.

Dances for November 22, 2012
This week we are starting to review dances for the December Social. The dances for this social are easier and we should be able to concentrate on the few difficult dances.
Cumberland Reel
RSCDS Book 1 – No. 11
32-bar jig for four couples in a four-couple longwise set
1 – 8 1st and 2nd couples dance right hands across left hands across back to places.
9 – 16 First couple lead down the middle and up to finish in first place, facing out.
17 – 22 1st couple, followed by 2nd, 3rd and 4th couples cast off and dance behind their own lines.
23 – 28 1st couple, followed by 2nd, 3rd and 4th couples dance up the middle. On bar 28, 1st couple face down and 2nd, 3rd and 4th couples join both hands with partners to make an arch in the middle.
29 – 32 First couple dance down the middle under the arches to fourth place. On bar 32, 2nd, 3rd and 4th couples release hands and step up and out to new places.

1 – 4 1st man and 3rd woman, and 1st woman and 3rd man, turn with the right hand half way round to face each other then, pulling back right shoulders, cast out to opposite places and remain facing out.
5 – 8 1st and 3rd couples continue dancing on clockwise one place round the set, curving in to finish back to back in the centre of the set, 1st couple facing fourth place, and 3rd couple facing second place. Meanwhile, 2nd and 4th couples repeat bars 1-4.
N.B. on bars 7 – 8, 1st and 2nd women, 1st and 2nd men, 3rd and 4th women and 3rd and 4th men dance in a curve round each other to new places, passing right shoulder.
9 – 16 All dance reels of four across the set.

Strathspey – 3 couples – 32 bars
1 – 4 1st couple set to each other and then, giving right hands cross over to second place on opposite sides and stay facing out. 2nd couple step up on bars 3-4.
5 – 8 1st couple dance round their first corners, passing them by the right and then turn each other with the left hand to finish in the middle of the dance in second place with the man facing down and the woman facing up.
9 – 12 2nd, 1st and 3rd men dance right hands across on the men’s side, while their partners dance right hands across on the women’s side. At the end, 1st couple pass each other by the right.
13 – 16 1st woman dances left hands across with 2nd and 3rd men on the men’s side while 1st man dances left hands across with 2nd and 3rd women on the women’s side. 1st man finishes between 2nd couple in first place all facing down, while 1st woman finishes between 3rd couple in third place all facing up.

9 – 12 First couple, holding their 1st Corner in Promenade position on their right, leads them round behind their 2nd Corner and places them in the opposite 1st Corner position. At the same time the 2nd Corners Advance towards each other and Retire (Diagram 1).

Reel - 3 couples - 32 bars
Tune - "Bratach Bana"
1 – 4 1st couple turn by the right hand and cast off to second place on own sides. (2nd couple move up on Bars 3 - 4)
5 – 8 1st man dances down between 3rd couple and then casts up to second place on the ladies' side. 1st lady dances up between 2nd couple and then casts off to second place on the men's side.
9 - 12 Half reels of three on the sides. 1st man gives right shoulder to 2nd lady, while 1st lady gives right shoulder to 3rd man.
13 – 16 Half reels of three across the dance. 1st man cuts up between 3rd couple who are in top place, giving left shoulder to 3rd man. 1st lady cuts down between 2nd couple who are in 3rd place, giving left shoulder to 2nd lady.
NOTE The 2nd and 3rd couples dance round loops on the corners between the half reels. (1st couple are now in second place on own sides, 2nd couple are in third place on wrong sides, and 3rd couple are in top place on wrong sides).

31- 32 1st and 2nd men, and 1st and 3rd ladies change places on the sides giving left hands. This last four bar figure is like half rights and lefts but on the diagonal, and 2nd man and 3rd lady do "polite" turns at the end.

1 – 4 1st couple turn by the right hand and cast off to second place on own sides. (2nd couple move up on Bars 3 - 4)
5 – 8 1st man dances down between 3rd couple and then casts up to second place on the ladies' side. 1st lady dances up between 2nd couple and then casts off to second place on the men's side.
9 - 12 Half reels of three on the sides. 1st man gives right shoulder to 2nd lady, while 1st lady gives right shoulder to 3rd man.
13 – 16 Half reels of three across the dance. 1st man cuts up between 3rd couple who are in top place, giving left shoulder to 3rd man. 1st lady cuts down between 2nd couple who are in 3rd place, giving left shoulder to 2nd lady.
NOTE The 2nd and 3rd couples dance round loops on the corners between the half reels. (1st couple are now in second place on own sides, 2nd couple are in third place on wrong sides, and 3rd couple are in top place on wrong sides).
17 – 18 1st couple turn each other with the left hand.
19 – 20 1st couple turn first corners (who are on the wrong sides) by the right hand.
21 – 22 1st couple pass each other by the right shoulder to face second corners.

29 - 30 1st man and 3rd lady change places giving right hands. 1st lady and 2nd man change places similarly.
31- 32 1st and 2nd men, and 1st and 3rd ladies change places on the sides giving left hands. This last four bar figure is like half rights and lefts but on the diagonal, and 2nd man and 3rd lady do "polite" turns at the end.
Repeat, having passed a couple.

Dances for October 25, 2012
Now that the 1812 weekend is over we will focus on the November social. The program is quite challenging and we will only be able to cover each dance once. You may wish to only do the dances you are confident with at the social.
We will need four couple sets for the first dance. If we don't have the numbers we will opt to do another dance from the social.

THE BEES OF MAGGIEKNOCKATER
THE CANADIAN BOOK OF SCOTTISH COUNTRY DANCES by John Drewry
Maggieknockater is a hamlet two miles North-east of Craigellachie. In a field there beside the road is a large sign - “Maggieknockater Apiary” - hence the title of this dance.
Jig – 4 couples – 32 bars.
1 – 4 1st couple, giving right hands in passing, cross over to opposite sides and cast off to second place. (2nd couple step up on Bars 3-4)
5 – 8 1st and 3rd couples dance right hands across. At the end:- 3rd lady turns towards 1st man, retaining hold of his right hand, then joins left hands with him in promenade hold facing out towards the ladies’ side; 1st lady dances similarly with 3rd man so that they finish facing out towards the men’s side of the dance.
9 – 12 Reels of three on the sides. 1st man and 3rd lady, dancing together, dance half a reel of three on the ladies’ side with 4th and 2nd ladies. They pass 4th lady by the right to begin. 1st lady and 3rd man, dancing together, similarly dance half a reel of three on the men’s side with 2nd and 4th men. They pass 2nd man by the right to begin. On Bar 12, when they meet in the centre of the dance, 1st and 3rd couples drop hands and join hands with partners in promenade hold so that 1st couple are facing towards the men’s side and 3rd couple facing towards the ladies’ side.
13 – 16 Continuing the reels of three on the sides:- 1st couple dance half a reel of three on the men’s side with 2nd and 4th men, passing 2nd man (in fourth place) by the left; 3rd couple dance half a reel of three on the ladies’ side with 4th and 2nd ladies, passing 4th lady (in top place) by the left. On Bar 16 1st man and 3rd lady join hands in promenade hold facing the men’s side, while 1st lady and 3rd man join hands in promenade hold facing the ladies’ side.
17 – 20 Continuing the reels of three on the sides:- 1st man and 3rd lady dance on the men’s side passing 2nd man by the right. 1st lady and 3rd man dance on the ladies’ side passing 4th lady by the right. On Bar 20 1st and 3rd couples join hands with partners.
21 – 24 Continuing the reels of three on the sides:- 1st couple dance on the ladies’ side passing 4th lady by the left. 3rd couple dance on the men’s side passing 2nd man by the left.
25 – 28 1st man turns 3rd lady by the LEFT hand one and a half times to leave her in second place; 1st lady, similarly, turns 3rd man by the RIGHT hand. At the end 1st couple dance down crossing over to face 4th couple on own sides.
29 – 32 1st man turns 4th man one and a half times by the right hand; 1st lady turns 4th lady by the left hand. 1st couple finish in fourth place.
Repeat with a new top couple.

THE BEES OF MAGGIEKNOCKATER
THE CANADIAN BOOK OF SCOTTISH COUNTRY DANCES by John Drewry
Maggieknockater is a hamlet two miles North-east of Craigellachie. In a field there beside the road is a large sign - “Maggieknockater Apiary” - hence the title of this dance.
Jig – 4 couples – 32 bars.
1 – 4 1st couple, giving right hands in passing, cross over to opposite sides and cast off to second place. (2nd couple step up on Bars 3-4)
5 – 8 1st and 3rd couples dance right hands across. At the end:- 3rd lady turns towards 1st man, retaining hold of his right hand, then joins left hands with him in promenade hold facing out towards the ladies’ side; 1st lady dances similarly with 3rd man so that they finish facing out towards the men’s side of the dance.
9 – 12 Reels of three on the sides. 1st man and 3rd lady, dancing together, dance half a reel of three on the ladies’ side with 4th and 2nd ladies. They pass 4th lady by the right to begin. 1st lady and 3rd man, dancing together, similarly dance half a reel of three on the men’s side with 2nd and 4th men. They pass 2nd man by the right to begin. On Bar 12, when they meet in the centre of the dance, 1st and 3rd couples drop hands and join hands with partners in promenade hold so that 1st couple are facing towards the men’s side and 3rd couple facing towards the ladies’ side.
13 – 16 Continuing the reels of three on the sides:- 1st couple dance half a reel of three on the men’s side with 2nd and 4th men, passing 2nd man (in fourth place) by the left; 3rd couple dance half a reel of three on the ladies’ side with 4th and 2nd ladies, passing 4th lady (in top place) by the left. On Bar 16 1st man and 3rd lady join hands in promenade hold facing the men’s side, while 1st lady and 3rd man join hands in promenade hold facing the ladies’ side.
17 – 20 Continuing the reels of three on the sides:- 1st man and 3rd lady dance on the men’s side passing 2nd man by the right. 1st lady and 3rd man dance on the ladies’ side passing 4th lady by the right. On Bar 20 1st and 3rd couples join hands with partners.
21 – 24 Continuing the reels of three on the sides:- 1st couple dance on the ladies’ side passing 4th lady by the left. 3rd couple dance on the men’s side passing 2nd man by the left.
25 – 28 1st man turns 3rd lady by the LEFT hand one and a half times to leave her in second place; 1st lady, similarly, turns 3rd man by the RIGHT hand. At the end 1st couple dance down crossing over to face 4th couple on own sides.
29 – 32 1st man turns 4th man one and a half times by the right hand; 1st lady turns 4th lady by the left hand. 1st couple finish in fourth place.
Repeat with a new top couple.

5 – 8 First couple, with nearer hands joined, dance down between third couple and cast up to first corners; second couple step up on bars seven and eight.
9 – 16 First couple reel of four with first corners passing partner with left shoulder at end of reel.
17 – 24 First couple reel of four with second corners finishing as in Fig.
25 – 26 First couple cast off into second place.
27 – 28 Second, first and third couples set.
29 – 32 Second, first and third couples turn partners with two hands.

32-bar hornpipe for three couples in a four-couple longwise set
1 – 4 1st and 2nd women, giving left hands, and, at the same time, 1st and 2nd men, giving right hands, turn one and a half times. 1st couple finish facing out.
5 – 8 1st couple dance down behind 3rd couple, meet and dance up to second place finishing back to back in the middle facing own sides.
9 – 16 2nd, 1st and 3rd couples dance double triangles. On bars 15-16, as 1st couple set, they turn by the right on the spot to face each other, still in the middle of the set.
17 – 24 1st couple, joining both hands, slip down the middle and back to second place in the middle of the set facing up.
25 – 28 1st woman with 2nd and 3rd men dances left hands across while, at the same time, 1st man with 2nd and 3rd women dances right hands across. 1st couple meet in the middle at second place, facing up.
29 – 32 1st couple dance a half figure of eight up round 2nd couple to second place on own sides.

This is the final class before the 1812 dance. We will try to get through another four dances from that program

RSCDS Book 9 – No. 10
48-bar reel for three couples in a four-couple longwise set
1 – 8 1st couple dance reels of three, 1st woman with 2nd and 3rd men and 1st man with 2nd and 3rd women. To begin 1st woman crosses down to pass 3rd man by the left and 1st man dances across to partner’s place to pass 2nd woman by the right. 1st couple finish in partner’s original place. (Note 1)
9 – 16 1st, 2nd and 3rd couples dance reels of three on own sides. To begin 1st man crosses down to pass 3rd man by the left and 1st woman dances across to original place to pass 2nd woman by the right. 1st couple finish facing 2nd woman.
