Dances for May 9, 2013

This is the last class of the season. I hope some of you can make it out to our summer classes starting the following week. Same time, same place. We will post the dances we are planning to do on our web site http://ottawadancescottish.org/summer 


This week we will cover a couple of dances from the AGM, a popular dance and a dance from the fall workshop program

First Figure
1 – 8    All four couples dance eight hands round and back.
9 – 12    All four ladies pass in front of their partners and dance behind the next man, round him, and into the middle of the dance.
13 – 16    All four ladies dance a right hand wheel right round.
17 – 20    All four ladies then pass in front of 3rd man round and dance behind the 4th man to finish in the middle of the dance.
21 – 24    All four ladies dance four hands across in a right hand wheel to finish ready for a promenade with partners.
25 – 32    All four couples dance promenade round to own places.

Second Figure
1 – 4    1st couple, turning to the left, dance round behind 2nd couple, 1st man passing round 2nd man to finish facing him while 1st lady dances round 2nd lady to finish facing her. At the same time, 3rd couple dance round behind 4th couple, 3rd man dancing round 4th man to finish facing him while 3rd lady dances round 4th lady to finish facing her.
5 – 8    All set and turn right hand the person they are facing, finishing in line of four.
9 – 16    All four couples dance a reel of four across the dance to finish in lines of four.
17 – 24    Couples 1 and 3 dance complete figure of eight round 2’s and  4’s, who stand still, and finish in centre.
25 – 28    1’s and 3’s dance four hands across, giving left hands.
29 – 32    1st couple dance round behind 2nd couple and return to places while at the same time 3rd couple dance round behind 4th couple and return to places.
33 – 36    2nd and 4th couples repeat bars 1-4 dancing round behind 3rd and 1st couples.
37 – 40    All couples repeat bars 5-8.
41 – 48    All four couples dance reels of four up and down the dance to finish in lines of four.
49 – 56    2nd and 4th couples dance figure of eight round 3rd and 1st couples who stand still.
57 – 60    2nd and 4th couples repeat bars 25-28.
61 – 64    2nd and 4th couples repeat bars 29-32.

Third Figure
1 – 8     All four couples dance promenade round to places. (On last bar of 2nd Figure men 1 and 3 dance in on left foot to meet partners.)
9 – 12    All four men pass in front of their partners, moving to the right, and dance behind the next lady, round her and into the middle of the dance.
13 – 16    All four men dance left hands across in a wheel.
17 – 20    All four men pass in front of 3rd lady, round the 4th lady and finish in the middle of the dance.
21 – 24    All four men dance four hands across in a left hand wheel to finish for a circle of eight.
25 – 32    All four men dance a circle of eight round to the right and back to the left to finish.

1-8        1s dance down between 2s touching NH & dance out and down round 3s to meet & dance up the centre of the set with NH joined, on bars 7-8 1L dances a slow turn under her partner’s arm. 1s finish in the middle of the set facing down & take promenade hold. 2s step up on bars 5-6.

9-16    1s dance a reel of 3 with 3M & 2L giving RSh to 3M to begin.
17-24    1s dance a reel of 3 with 3L & 2M giving LSh to 3L to begin. 1s finish in the middle facing down. On bar 24 2s & 3s dance into the centre facing up and take promenade hold.

25-32    2s, 1s, 3s dance circulating allemande: 1s dance down and out to begin and use bars 31-32 to cross back to own sides giving RH. 2s & 3s dance as in 3C allemande finishing in 1st and 3rd places respectively.

32-bar reel for three couples in a four-couple longwise set

1 – 8    1st couple, giving right hands, cross over and cast off one place on opposite sides. 1st couple, giving left hands, cross over and 1st woman casts up one place while 1st man casts off one place. 1st woman finishes between 2nd couple facing 2nd man with 1st man between 3rd couple facing 3rd woman. 2nd couple step up on bars 3-4.

9 – 16    1st woman with 2nd couple and 1st man with 3rd couple dance reels of three across the set. 1st woman and 2nd man and 1st man and 3rd woman pass by the right to begin. On bar 16, 1st couple, with nearer hands joined, face 2nd woman.

17 – 24    1st couple set to 2nd woman. 1st couple turn towards each other and change hands to face 3rd man and set. 1st couple move round to face 3rd woman and set. 1st     couple turn towards each other and change hands to face 2nd man and set. 1st couple finish facing second corners.

25 – 30    2nd, 1st and 3rd couples dance reels of three on the sides. 1st couple pass second corners by the right to begin.

31 – 32    1st couple, giving right hands, cross to second place on own sides.

Repeat, having passed a couple.

Dances for May 2, 2013

Two classes left in the year. This week we will be doing some dances from the Beginner's Social, the AGM and one popular dance.

The Rothesay Rant
TWELVE SCOTTISH COUNTRY DANCES devised by Members of the Birmingham Branch, R.S.C.D.S., 1973
(a Jig for Four Couples in a Square Set)

Each couple has progressed one place clockwise at the end of every 32 bars.

1 – 4    Giving right hand to partner, change places with two skip change of step. Retain hold and give left hand to the next person so that all are joined in a circle, women facing in, men facing out, to set right and left.

5 – 8    Dropping right hands, change places with person on left hand to join in a circle again, men facing in, women facing out. Set right and left, women turning by the right to face the centre on bar 8 and forming square set

9 – 12    First couple with third couple, half Ladies’ Chain

13 – 16    First couple with third couple, half Rights and Lefts.

17 – 24    Similarly, second and fourth couples dance half Ladies’ Chain, followed by half Rights and Lefts, to finish as in

25 – 32    Eight hands round and back again.

Repeat from new position.
Note. Half Ladies’ Chain is started each time from the sides of the set, as in bar 9.

1 – 8    1st couple lead down the middle and up to finish facing down the dance; 2nd couple move in to face 1st couple.

9 – 16    1st and 2nd couples Rondel.

17 – 24    With nearer hands joined, 2nd and 1st women and 2nd and 1st  men advance one step, retire one step then turn partners once round and merge into four hands round to places on sides.  (2nd couple at top, 1st couple in second place.)

25 – 32    2nd and 1st couples all round pousette.

Repeat, having passed a couple.

The Sauchie Haugh refers to the willowy meadow by the river (in this case the meadow which gave modern Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow its name).

1 – 8     1st couple set and then 1st woman, followed by her partner, casts off; she crosses below 3rd couple and dances up behind 3rd  man to second place on the men's side; 1st  man dances below 3rd  woman and up the middle to second place on the women's side. 1st  couple finish facing down. 2nd  couple step up on bars 7 – 8.

9 – 16    2nd , 1st and 3rd couples dance Grand Chain, 2nd and 1st men finish facing out.

17 – 24    2nd and 1st couples dance Ladies’ Chain.

25 – 32 2nd, 1st and 3rd couples advance and retire and then 1st couple turn with the right hand one and a half times to second place on own sides.

Repeat, having passed a couple.

A reel for four couples in a longways set.

1 – 4    1st and 3rd ladies cast off one place and dance into the centre line of the dance to finish facing up the dance. Meanwhile 2nd and 4th men cast up one place and dance into the centre line of the dance to finish 2nd man facing 1st lady, and 4th man facing 3rd lady.
   
5 – 12    1st and 3rd ladies with 2nd and 4th men dance a reel of four up and down the centre line of the dance. To start the reel 2nd man passes 1st lady right shoulder and 4th man likewise with 3rd lady.

13 – 16    1st lady with 2nd man and likewise 3rd lady with 4th man turn each other three quarters round by the right hand to return to places.

17 – 20    1st man with 2nd lady, and likewise 3rd man with 4th lady, turn each other by the right hand once round and return to places.

21 – 24    1st couple with 2nd couple and likewise 3rd couple with 4th couple dance four hands round to the left.
   
25 – 28    All joining hands on the sidelines, dance advance and retire.

29 – 32    1st couple, right hands joined, lead to 4th place, while 2nd, 3rd and 4th couples join nearer hands and step up on bars 29-30.

Repeat with a new leading couple.
