Dances for February 23, 2012

With the February social behind us we will focus on dances on the March social, tea dance and Ball coming up in the next two months. There is some overlap of dances on the programs but there are still a lot of dances to cover for these programs. As promised we have slotted another session for Alltshellach. This week it's my turn to take you through the dance.


THE GATES OF EDINBURGH

32 Bar Reel for 3 couples                                   

Bars

1- 8    1 W dances reel of 3 with 2 & 3 M, while 1M dances reel of 3 with 2 & 3 W

 9-16    1C dance reels of 3 on own sides and finish 1L between 2s who have dances up to the top who face down & 1M between 3s who face up

17-24    1s+2s+3s set twice, turn opposite person 2H, 1s end 2nd place on own sides

25-32    2s+1s+3s set twice & turn partners RH

TAC :
.16         It is accepted that in these reels, partners touch hands where
possible.  All must move more quickly thru bars 13-16 to allow 1st M to dance thru original position and diagonally down, to finish between 3C while 2C dance up to 1st place.

RSCDS:
The derivation of the name has been the subject of much discussion over the years.  Although one school of thought believes that “gates” is used in the sense of the streets, the generally accepted derivation is of the gates of the walled city of Edinburgh being opened and closed at the beginning and end of  each day.  As a result, it is accepted that in the reels, during bars 1-16, each couple should give nearer hands to partner to signify such opening and closing of the gates.

9 – 16    First couple, followed by second couple, lead down.  On the fourth step the first couple turn towards each other, lead up between second couple who dance down to follow first couple to original places.

17 – 24    Reel of four across the dance, first woman and second man passing left shoulders to begin.

25 – 32    First and second couples dance the Tournée.

Unfortunately, I will be attending a meeting for the Ardbrae group. Jody will be taking the class on her own. With the social on Friday she will try to review some of the dances for the social



The Reel of Mey  (Slow 6/8)
RSCDS Book  22 – No. 1

MUSIC                DESCRIPTION.
  Bars.
1 – 4    First couple, giving right hands in passing, cross over and cast off one place. Second couple move up.

5 – 8    First and second couples, giving right hands, dance four hands across right round.

9 – 12    First couple, giving left hands in passing, cross over and cast off one place. Third couple move up.

13 – 16    First and third couples, giving left hands, dance four hands across right round.

17 – 24    First couple dance to the top, cast off one place on own sides, dance down between third couple, cast up round them and cross to corners. Third couple move down.

25 – 32    First couple dance reel of four diagonally with first corners, finishing by dancing round each other, passing right shoulders to face second corners.

33 – 40    First couple dance reel of four diagonally with second corners, finishing on own sides in second place.

41 – 48    Second, first and third couples dance six hands round and back again.

1 – 8    1st couple set and, giving right hands, cross over. They cast off one place on opposite sides and then turn with the left hand to finish in a diagonal line of four between first corners. 1st couple retain hold of partner’s left hand and give right hands to first corners. 2nd couple step up on bars 5 – 6.

9 – 10    1st couple balance in line with first corners.

11 – 16    Releasing left hands, 1st couple turn first corners half way round with the right hand and then, releasing right hands, 1st couple, followed closely by their corners, chase clockwise half way round the set passing behind 2nd woman and 3rd man. At the end, the corners have changed places with each other, while 1st couple dance in to join right hands in a diagonal line of four between second corners and join left hands with second corners (Fig. 1).

17 – 18    1st couple balance in line with second corners.

19 – 24    Releasing right hands, 1st couple turn second corners half way round with the left hand and then, releasing left hands, 1st couple, followed closely by their corners, chase anticlockwise half way round the set passing behind 3rd woman and 2nd man. At the end, 1st couple pass each other by the left to finish in second place on opposite sides facing out. All are on opposite sides in the order 3, 1, 2 (Fig. 2).

25 – 28    3rd, 1st  and 2nd couples dance half reels of three on opposite sides, 3rd and 1st men, and 1st and 2nd women passing by the left to begin.

29 – 32    2nd, 1st and 3rd couples set on opposite sides and, giving right hands, cross over.

Repeat, having passed a couple.

Bars                        Description

1 – 6    1st woman casts off two places, crosses to the opposite side and dances up behind 2nd and 3rd men to her partner’s original place. 1st man follows his partner, crossing over and dancing behind 2nd and 3rd women, and up the middle to his partner’s original place.

7 – 8    1st couple set to each other.

9 – 14    1st couple repeat bars 1-6, with 1st man casting off and 1st woman following. 1st couple finish in original places.

15 – 16    1st couple set to each other.

17 – 24    1st couple lead down the middle and up to finish facing each other in the middle of the set with both hands joined. 2nd couple step in.

25 – 32    1st and 2nd couples dance a poussette.

Dances for February 9, 2012

Last week was quite challenging. This week should be a little easier. We have decided to include a dance from the Belleville Ball program - Cadgers in the Cannongate. There are a few in the class going to the workshop and this is a good dance to know.


Beach Dancer
A 32 bar Jig for 3 couples in a 4 couple longwise set
For Margaret Blackhall, a teacher at Kamo Club who lives on the coast at Ngunguru.
Devised by Eddy West 2003.

1-4    First couple set and cross giving right hand.
5-8    First couple set to second couple and change places on the side giving left hands (men remain facing out).

9-16    Second and first couples dance a ladies chain, first man finishes facing out. First couple must continue into the next figure without hesitation.

17-20    First man casts down round third lady and crosses to third place, own side then casts up behind third man to second place, first lady follows to own side third place then dances up the middle to second place on own side.
21-24 First and second ladies, and at the same time first and second men, turn giving left hands.

25-32 Second, first and third couples dance reels of three on the sides, first couple passing third couple right shoulder to start.

48-bar reel for three couples in a four-couple longwise set

Bars                        Description

1 – 8    1st couple dance reels of three, 1st woman with 2nd and 3rd men and 1st man with 2nd and 3rd women. To begin 1st woman crosses down to pass 3rd man by the left and 1st man dances across to partner’s place to pass 2nd woman by the right. 1st couple finish in partner’s original place. (Note 1)

9 – 16    1st, 2nd and 3rd couples dance reels of three on own sides. To begin 1st man crosses down to pass 3rd man by the left and 1st woman dances across to original place to pass 2nd woman by the right. 1st couple finish facing 2nd woman.

17 – 18    1st couple, giving nearer hands, set to 2nd woman.

19 – 20    1st couple, with two pas de basque, move round to face 2nd man. (Note 2)

21 – 22    1st couple set to 2nd man.

23 – 24    1st couple, with two pas de basque retire to places.

25 – 28    1st and 2nd couples set, and dance right hands across halfway round.

29 – 32    2nd and 1st couples set, and dance left hands across back to places.

33 – 36    1st couple, giving right hands, cross over and cast off one place on opposite sides. 2nd couple step up on bars 35-36.

37 – 40    1st couple, giving left hands, turn one and a half times to finish in second place on own sides.

41 – 48    2nd and 1st couples dance rights and lefts.

Notes:
1.    In some areas, on bar 8, 1st woman dances across the top of the set to original place while 1st man dances across from 2nd woman’s place to his original place. To begin the second reels, 1st and 2nd man and 1st and 2nd woman pass by the right.
2.    In bars 19-22, 1st couple retain nearer hands throughout.

9 – 16    2nd, 1st and 3rd couples dance reels of three on own sides, all joining nearer hands with partner where possible. 2nd and 3rd couples turn the long way round to places.

19 – 20    2nd and 1st couples turn partners by the left hand halfway round, to finish facing down the dance.

21 – 24    1st couple, followed by 2nd couple, lead down, cross over below 3rd couple and cast up to original place.

5 - 8    1M, followed by partner, casts up and dances down the middle to finish facing 3M, 1W faces 2M.

9 – 16    1M with 3C and 1W with 2C dance reels of three across, passing right shoulders to begin; finish as started.

17 – 20    1M & 3M and 1W & 2M turn right hands.
21 - 24    1M & 3W and 1W & 2W turn left hands, 1C finish in the centre facing down, (1M between 3C, 1W between 2C).

25 – 28    1M followed by partner, casts up one place on men’s side and dances across to the opposite side in second place. 1W finishes in second place on the men’s side.
29-32    1C turn right hands one and a half times, to finish in second place own sides.

Repeat having passes a couple.

This dance was inspired by the magnificent Wellingtonia trees near Finchampstead, Berkshire which I regularly travel past on the way to class.

Dances for February 2, 2012

This week will be challenging with a couple of more difficult dances from upcoming programs.

Alltshellach is a very challenging dance from the March program. We are covering it now so we can review it again before the social. 

The Reel of Mey has a basic pattern but there is a funny bit in the diagonal reels. It does require some good dancing.

17 – 24    1st couple and first corners dance a corner chain. 1st couple finish facing second corners.

25 – 32    1st couple and second corners dance a corner chain. 1st couple finish in second place on own sides.
