For the next two classes before the Christmas dance we will be reviewing dances. There will be no new material for the rest of the season. Hopefully, some of this will be familiar.
We will also be trying to cover difference dances before and after the break. The dances after the break should be easy enough.

Bars Description
1 – 4 1st couple set and cast off one place. 2nd couple step up on bars 3 - 4.
5 – 8 1st couple dance a half figure of eight round 2nd couple.
9 – 12 1st couple set twice. On bars 11-12, 1st woman pulls back right shoulder to finish facing out.
13 – 16 1st woman casts up round 2nd man and dances down to finish between 3rd couple facing 3rd man while 1st man dances across the set and casts up round 2nd man to finish between 2nd couple facing 2nd man.
17 – 24 1st man dances a reel of three with 2nd couple passing 2nd man by the right shoulder to begin while 1st woman dances a reel of three with 3rd couple passing 3rd man by the right shoulder to begin.

Dances for November 25
We will be focusing on dances for the Christmas social for the rest of the fall session. Tonight will be the last of the new dances for the fall.
The main lesson will be Joie de Vivre. The focus will be on the 3 couple allemande. Although the rest of the dance also provides a challenge for new dancers. We are hoping to have a quick review of Allt An Duin. We covered it a few weeks ago. Hopefully some of it will come back

Basic Class - October 28, 2010
This class should prove to be an interesting class. We have discovered that some of the dancers are attending the RSCDS Kingston Branch workshop. We will cover a few of the basic dances from that program this week and next.
The first will be The Deil Amang the Tailors. A perennial favorite and a good one for newer dancers to learn. The first 8 bars is a bit quick and the music has a frantic feel to it. Should be fun.
This is the second week for strathspey. We will be teaching From the Broomielaw off the Kingston program.It is one we would not normally teach to beginners. Not because it is difficult but because it has a four couple allemande. You can probably count on one hand the number of dances that have a four couple allemande. Just not very transferable to other dances.
If time permits we will add St. Andrews Fair to the evening. An basic dance that should set the dancers at ease after the first two.

Last week we introduced reels of three. Tonight we will review reels of three in a different dance - Allt An Duin by Roy Goldring.
We will also be introducing the Strathspey rhythm to the class. Should be a hoot. I have my go to recording for strathspey practice ready - Strathglass House by Muriel Johnston & Keith Smith. We will also be learning a new figure tonight - The Allemande for 2 couples. A figure of progression, at the end 1st and 2nd couples have changed places.
If time permits we will finish with Andrew & Godron's Jig. Another fun and easy dance from Roy Goldring.

Welcome new Scottish Country Dancers
Welcome to the blog for the RSCDS, Ottawa branch, Thursday basic class. I hope to post information on what was has been covered in the class. I will also post some additional resources available online.
We held the second class last night. I was glad to see many people return after their first week. The Ottawa branch allows you to attend a second class at no extra cost. If you can, try to attend the Tuesday Basic class as well. You will pick up Scottish Country Dancing almost twice as fast by going to class twice a week.
