Dances for January 10, 2013

Happy New Year!

We only have two weeks to the January social so we are going to start full speed ahead covering the dances for that social.

THE ST BERNARD'S WALTZ (W16) couples around the room in ballroom hold heading anti-clockwise, ladies on the outside.

1-4    In ballroom hold, take 3 steps (step-close, step-close, step-close) sideways toward the lady's right (man's left), then stamp both feet. (lady begins with right foot, man with the left)
5-6 Take 2 steps sideways back in the opposite direction. (step-close, step-close)
7-8 Take 2 (walking) steps toward the centre of the circle (lady beginning with the right foot, man with the left foot)
9-10 Take 2 steps back out (same feet)
11-12 Man drops right hand and lady turns under his raised left arm.
13-16 Waltz onward (to lady's right), finishing ready to repeat the dance.

1 – 16    Four progressive half-reels of three across the dance – danced as follows:
       
1 – 4    1st couple with 2nd woman dance a half-reel of three. 1st woman passes her partner with the right shoulder to begin and finishes in the middle of the set facing her own side of the dance. 1st man finishes in 1st woman’s original place and 2nd woman in 1st man’s original place.

5 – 8    1st couple with 2nd man dance a half-reel of three. 1st woman passes her partner with the left shoulder to begin and finishes in the middle of the set facing the men’s side of the dance. 1st man finishes in 2nd man’s original place and 2nd man in 1st woman’s original place.

9 – 12    1st couple repeat bars 1-4 with 3rd woman who finishes in 2nd man’s original place.

13 – 16    1st couple repeat bars 5-8 with 3rd man, who finishes in 2nd woman’s             original place. 1st couple finish in third place in the middle of the set.

17 – 20    1st couple turn with right hands and cast up one place on own sides. 3rd             couple step down on bars 19-20.

21 – 24    1st couple dance half figure of eight round 2nd couple.

25 – 28    2nd, 1st and 3rd couples turn partners with right hands three-quarters             round to finish in a line up and down the dance; facing partners and retaining right hands, all set.

29 – 32    2nd, 1st and 3rd couples turn partners with right hands to finish on own             sides and then, joining hands on the sides, set to partners.

Repeat, having passed a couple.

Bars 1-16   In the four progressive half reels across the dance, the 1st woman cuts each reel through the middle
        giving her partner, successively, right, left, right and left shoulders.

1-16          For the four consecutive half reels of three, 1st woman starts by facing her partner, giving him R, L, R, &     then L shouders. Note: support dancers all dance up into their half reels & finish one place up on opposite     sides.
29-30    This is a tight turn – do not “steal” on bar 28.

32-bar strathspey for three couples in a four-couple longwise set

1 – 8    1st, 2nd and 3rd couples set to partners and, giving right hands, cross over. They set again and, giving right hands to partners, turn into the middle of the set to face up.

9 – 16    1st, 2nd and 3rd couples dance a promenade finishing in original places.

17 – 20    1st couple set to each other and cast off one place.  2nd couple step up on bars 19-20.

21 – 24    1st couple dance back to back.

25 – 32    2nd, 1st and 3rd couples dance six hands round and back.

Repeat, having passed a couple.

1 – 8    First couple, cross with the right hand and cast off one place. (Second couple step up on bars 3 & 4.) First couple turn each other with the left hand 1 ¼ times. First couple finish facing the lady’s side, the man has his partner on his right. ***

9 – 16    First couple in tandem, dance a right shoulder reel of three with second and third lady. *

17 – 24    First couple in tandem, dance a left shoulder reel of three with second and third men. **

25 – 32    First couple with promenade hold dance out the ladies’ side and                 down around third lady. First couple dance up the middle, drop hands and cast around second couple to finish in second place.

First couple repeat from second place.

* First lady, followed by her partner, they pass third lady with the right
shoulder to begin. First couple turn by the right to face up the set. First man,
followed by first lady pass second lady with the right shoulder. First man,
followed by first lady pass third lady with the left shoulder. First couple
turning by the left they face down the set. First lady, followed by first man.
Dance across the set to face third man.

** First lady, followed by her partner, pass third man with the left shoulder
to begin. First couple turn by the left to face up the set. First man, followed
by first lady, pass second man by the left shoulder. First man, followed by
first lady pass third man with the right shoulder. First couple turning by the
right they face down the set. First lady, followed by first man, dance across
the set to finish between second and third lady.

*** Note: First couple should begin parallel with the side of the set and
remain parallel with the set throughout the reel. This will require good
covering. First couple must be aware of their partner especially on the turns.
First couple cover with each other not just follow each other. Where the
instructions say follow also read cover.
